Choosing a location for your dream cottage can feel overwhelming. With so many beautiful regions in Ontario, it can be hard to decide on just one. The Bruce Peninsula, located on the shores of Lake Huron in South Western Ontario, is a region like none other. With fascinating attractions, a world-renowned beach, and competitive prices, the Bruce Peninsula is not to be missed!
The Beach
Lake Huron is the second-largest of Canada’s Great Lakes. It’s a prime destination for cottagers and boasts warm water, long stretches of sandy beaches, and absolutely stunning scenery. It’s popular for swimmers, boaters, and hikers. Most communities in the Bruce Peninsula area are located a short walk or drive from the lakeshore. Tourists and residents alike enjoy spending time at the many beaches to participate in kayaking, boating or beach volleyball.
Lake Huron sunsets are like none other in the world. In fact, Sauble Beach is home to one of the most beautiful beaches and stunning sunsets in Ontario.
Breath-taking Attractions
The Bruce Peninsula separates the cooler waters of Georgian Bay, from the rest of Lake Huron. It’s home to the Flowerpot Island rock formations which are comprised of limestone formed due to decades of erosion caused by wind and rain.
Another island that is accessible by ferry boat from the Bruce Peninsula is Manitoulin Island. Manitoulin is the largest freshwater lake island in the world!
More than a thousand shipwrecks have been reported on Lake Huron, including the first European ship to sail the Great Lakes. Located at the tip of the peninsula, the Father Five National Marine Park offers excursions to view 22 underwater shipwrecks by diving or glass-bottomed boat. Bruce Peninsula National Park is another beautiful attraction that beckons hikers, swimmers and explorers and makes for a great day trip for cottagers.
Small Town Living
The Bruce Peninsula is simply a stunning place to live. One perk of the area is that there are many small communities to choose from when building your dream cottage. Whether you choose to build in town, on the lakeshore, or in the country, you’ll still have full access to the amenities you’re used to.
Tobermory, Lion’s Head and Sauble Beach are all small towns located right along the lakeshore. With direct access to the water, building your cottage in or around one of these beautiful beach towns means you and your family won’t have far to travel when spending your days at the beach. Locals living in the Bruce Peninsula are very welcoming and will make you feel like part of the small-town family.
Endless Outdoor Activities
Fishing is a popular activity in the Bruce Peninsula area. Walleye, Bass, and Northern Pike are readily available. Swimming and boating are also popular. The area boasts excellent walking, cycling and four-wheeling trails.
The Bruce Trail is Canada’s oldest and longest marked footpath. It runs along the Niagara Escarpment from Niagara to Tobermory and spans more than 890km of the main trail with 400km of side trails. The Bruce Trail is an excellent outdoor summer activity, but also a great place for skiing or snowshoeing during the winter.
Excellent Location
There’s something magical about endless miles of farm fields and crystal-clear water. Although equally stunning, the Muskoka area cottage country is expensive. Building your dream cottage in the Bruce Peninsula area is much more cost-effective, with all the same attractions and it’s even closer to the main Ontario hubs. The Northern tip of the peninsula is just over 3 hours from cities like Kitchener/Waterloo, Guelph, Toronto and Barrie, meaning you’ll be able to spend less time driving and more time enjoying your cottage weekends.
