I have to tell you – I’m not a big fan of doing laundry. Call me traditional or old-school, but I have always thought the laundry belonged in a dark corner in the basement.
And, as you may well expect, my wife tells me that I am just wrong. she showed me a laundry room that looked – well, pretty astounding. Built-in cabinets, 15 feet of counter space, french doors to the garden and an awesome sewing space.
But I’m more interested in the needs of the average family. When building your custom home, you need to consider the location of the laundry room. If you take a look at the Citadel at the Wingham Design Centre, you will see that the home is designed with three laundry centres: the Master bedroom on the main floor, near the upstairs bedrooms and just off the kitchen. While that might be a little more extravagant that all families look for, the bottom line is that when you plan your laundry room, think about convenience and ease of use.
When you’re working with your Royal Homes’ Designer, share your preferences with them. While many homes now put the laundry into a utility closet close to the kitchen and bedroom (the Ambercroft) is the perfect design for this, others will prefer an actual “utility” room. The Shakespeare is a very clever design that includes a utility room off of the kitchen. While it does have easy access to the garage, it is not the first room you walk into. Families using The Shakespeare as their foundation model can choose to include custom cabinetry in the laundry room, making the room very functional, including storage and laundry. The Milford has a great option for cottage living. The laundry is off of the main entrance, alongside a two-piece bathroom and closet. It’s a perfect place to toss wet beach towels when you come into the cottage!
