Two perplexed ladies stood by the waterfront. They looked up at Dianne and Michael’s stunning two-storey cottage and were confused by the bright two-storey structure that gleamed in front of their eyes. “We can’t believe this is a modular home,” they told Dianne.
But it was true. Six prefab modules – built in Royal’s 110,000-square foot production facility in Wingham – came together on a new foundation on their lot in May of 2023. A rickety old cottage with single-pane windows had been replaced by a beautiful new modern and energy-efficient one that suited Dianne and Michael’s family.
Still, the neighbours did not believe it. “Somebody said there was a factory-built home. We’ve been looking for it and looking for it, but the only new home is this one,” they told Michael. “We don’t understand. There’s no way this could be a factory-built home.”
The new cottage is complimented by a spacious four-car garage that Royal Homes also built. The new cottage shares a visual link with the garage building in an “eyebrow” window that matches the curved window above the garage doors.
The wall of windows facing Sturgeon Lake makes the custom design of the cottage, inspired by a design for another Royal Homes client, perfect for their lot, which features unobstructed waterfront and many tall trees.
“When you sat inside the (old) cottage, you never felt like you could see the lake,” Michael explained. “The best thing about this design, what we did I think, is we pulled the lake into the house.”
Overall, how was Royal Homes’ performance in building a gorgeous custom cottage, featuring two screened-in porches and a wood-burning fireplace, for Michael and Dianne? “Excellent,” Dianne said. “They were very easy to deal with. I made a few changes along the way that I thought were set in stone and they were very accommodating. I would definitely recommend them to anybody who is thinking of doing something like this.”
